March 2018 Desktop Calendar

March 2018 Desktop Calendar

We’re back to Spain for March. Gaztelugatxe (I can’t pronounce it either) is an islet on the coast of the Bay of Biscay near Bermeo – in kind of north central Spain. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. On top of the island stands a hermitage (named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque; San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish), dedicated to John the Baptist, that dates from the 9th-10th century.

The word gaztelugatxe comes from the Basque gaztelu = “castle”, “fort” and gaitz = “difficult”, “tremendous”, forming gaztelu gaitza, gaztelugatxe “the craggy fort”. It’s still dang hard to say.

It’s a long steep walk down to the bottom, and then 237 steps back to the top – where you can ring the bell on the outside of the chapel. And if you ring the bell, that means you get a March calendar.

So think happy Spanish thoughts in good late afternoon Bay of Biscay light and decorate your desktop with one of these delightfully-sized images to get through the month that brings us both Spring and Daylight Savings Time.

Mobile-esque (no calendar) versions:

  • iPad (and adjustable by you for all other phone / tablet versions)
