What camera should you buy? Answered!

Arches Shadows

Well, I wish I had thought of this – it’s a pretty good idea actually. I can’t say I disagree with a single thing they posit.

A lot of folks who don’t own a camera often ask the question “What camera should I buy?” The question, seemingly innocent, is anything but. You should ask a lot of the right questions based on your needs to get at a group of cameras that can meet those needs. The folks over at Make the Photo! have put together a clever and yet simple flowchart to actually answer the question for you. Their philosophy is to understand what you need and then walk you through the flow to find it. From their site:

“Unless it is your full time job, it’s almost impossible to keep up with the latest technology in digital cameras. New models are introduced almost daily.  Each new model continues to push the state-of-the-art forward at an amazing speed… Since there are thousands of cameras on the market, we are only including the best, newest, and most popular models.  No camera on this chart is a bad choice, but many perfectly fine cameras are not included.  Don’t fret if your favorite camera isn’t on the list.”

Their list  is somewhat Nikon/Canon specific, but they justify their choices down in the comments. If you’re partial to Pentax or Sony, e.g., their suggestion is just to deal with it – and I have to agree.  It’s a good and proper set of cameras and a good place to check when you feel the itch for new gear.
